April event ideas to bring your school community together

The short read

• PTAs, PTOs, and school organizations can use April observances and appreciation days to create engaging school events that strengthen community connections, boost school spirit, and encourage student participation.

• April event ideas such as National Walking Day, National Haiku Poetry Day, and reading-focused activities during School Library Month promote student wellness, creativity, literacy, and learning in fun and meaningful ways.

• Appreciation events for school librarians, volunteers, and school bus drivers provide valuable opportunities to recognize the individuals who help support students, schools, and educational success throughout the year.

• Seasonal school celebrations and community-building activities help increase family engagement, volunteer participation, and school pride while creating memorable experiences for students, staff, and families.

The long read

April is full of opportunities to create meaningful moments that bring your school community together in fun, creative, and heartfelt ways.

Whether you have a big event in mind or simply want to show appreciation, these April event ideas are easy to execute and make a big impact. Mark these dates on your calendar and start planning!

National Walking Day

Lace up those sneakers and get your school moving on the first Wednesday in April by celebrating National Walking Day

There are plenty of ways to honor the day—encourage families to walk to school instead of drive, hold a walk-a-thon during that week, or organize classroom walks throughout the school hallways.

National School Librarian Day

Let your school’s librarian know how much they are appreciated on National School Librarian Day, happening every April 4th as part of School Library Month

The American Association of School Librarians has tons of great resources you can use to celebrate and thank your librarian for everything they do. Make it an even bigger celebration by running a reading-a-thon during the month!

National Haiku Poetry Day

Every April 17th, National Haiku Poetry Day gives students an opportunity to unleash their inner poet. Haiku is a form of Japanese non-rhyming poetry that follows a syllable pattern of 5-7-5.

Writing haiku poems is also a great way to flex student creativity and language skills. To celebrate, hold a haiku writing contest and display the top entries around your school.

Volunteer Recognition Day

It’s no secret that it would be hard for most organizations to function without support and dedication from volunteers. Volunteer Recognition Day on April 20th is the perfect chance to honor and celebrate the commitment your volunteers make to your community.

Whether you run a social media campaign to highlight your volunteers or hold a volunteer appreciation breakfast sponsored by a local business, be sure to show love to your volunteers!

School Bus Driver Appreciation Day

Each year, the fourth Tuesday in April is set aside to celebrate the school bus drivers in your community. On School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, there are tons of ways to make drivers feel special, from banners made by students to small pick-me-ups that will make their day. Pick the one (or many!) that will make the drivers for your school feel the love.

The bottom line

As you look for events and celebrations for your school this April, there are plenty of opportunities you can take advantage of to build school spirit and connection.

From showing appreciation to fun ways to prioritize physical and mental fitness, April is a great time to come together and strengthen your school!
